Teen Jock Balances Falling in Love and Family Business in New Movie

Share

Golden Delicious is a fresh and engaging coming-of-age story about an Asian-Canadian teenager who is torn between his girlfriend’s dreams of their future and his father’s ambition, all the while struggling with finding himself and following his own desires.

In his first feature, director Jason Karman vividly brings to life the joys and complications of a young man who suddenly discovers feelings for the boy next door. Locally shot and set in East Vancouver, this film is a rare and important entry in a genre that has been traditionally represented by white, heterosexual, and mainstream narratives.

Wonderfully acted by an ensemble cast, and led by Cardi Wong in a charming, complex, and at times heartbreaking performance. Entertaining, sensitive, and ultimately feel-good, Golden Delicious is a sumptuous and culturally specific story set in the age of social media. It is meant to be told and seen.

A winner of the 2022 Frameline Completion Fund.

The film premiered Wednesday at the Vancouver International Film Festival, but will soon make its U.S. debut at the closing night of the Seattle Queer Film Festival (SQFF).

The 27th Annual SQFF, which runs from October 13-23 is an eleven-day event that features 59 programs from all over the world, all unified under the theme of “Queer Magic.” In addition to in-person screenings, many titles from its lineup will also offer virtual streaming opportunities for anyone in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska. You can find out more about the festival here.

As the festival’s special closing night presentation, Golden Delicious will premiere in person-on Saturday, October 22, and will be available virtually throughout SQFF’s run.

Further release details have yet to be announced, but you can watch the trailer for Golden Delicious below and find tickets to its SQFF screening here.
