Sex Is a Fact of Life and Sex Ed from an Early Age Actually Protects Kids

Will Larkins, the 17-year-old junior, who attends Winter Park High School in Winter Park, Florida, who emerged as nationally known LGBT activist in the wake of Florida’s passage of the so called “Don’t Say Gay” bill makes powerfully argues that sex education actually protects kids from predators.

In a thread on Twitter Larkins writes:

Sex is a fact of life and in most parts of the world is taught as such from birth. Sex ed from an early age give kids vocabulary they need to recognize and prevent grooming. They aren’t ready for that conversation though.

We’re sitting around debating whether or not the existence of queerness should be taught at any grade level when we should be pushing FOR sex education from an early age

Another student underscored Larkins writing:

Didn’t understand I got molested until 6th grade, when they gave a talk about sexual harassment/speaking up/etc in an all girl’s assembly. (ftm) It literally took me 7 years of anger and confusion about the times it happened to understand it was wrong because nobody spoke on it!!
People disagree with me on this, or get uncomfortable when I say this. I’m so relieved when I see other people who understand that sex talk should not be banned, but explained more thoroughly. None of this “look away” when a topic is uncomfortable.

Rogue Otter offers a great conclusion:

As a society it is our duty to insure children have the knowledge to keep themselves safe. This includes uncomfortable topics like sex, sexuality, and bodily autonomy. How can a child report their abuser, often someone in their own home, if they don’t know how say it.
