‘Gods & Monsters’ Writer’s Praise of ‘Heartstopper’ Shares Loveless Childhood Loss Many of Us Feel

In a brief paragraph, author Christopher Bram, one of America’s greatest novelists, and certainly among America’s top gay writers, poignantly expresses the melancholy loss of love we never were able to express in childhood after watching Netflix’s new series Heartstopper.

Bram is the author the amazing Father of Frankenstein, a fictional account of gay Hollywood director James Whale, that was adapted into the award winning film Gods and Monsters directed by Bill Condon and starring Sir Ian McKellen.

In his post on Facebook, Bram says:

Heartstopper, the new Netflix series, is sweet, earnest, wholesome, and something of a fantasy. The leads and their friends are so thoughtful and articulate. (But love is still difficult and complicated!) It’s a wonderful imagining of the kind of life we should all want. I wish I’d been exposed to such a fantasy when I was a teenager.

Indeed.

Bram is also the author of another favorite novel of mine, The Notorious Dr. August: His Real Life and Crimes , a sort of brilliant queer imagining of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Heartsopper is currently streaming on Netflix
