How the Queer Prom Recreates and Reclaims this Rite of Passage for Many

Share

Queer activist, designer, entrepreneur, and event producer NiK Kacy, as part of the City of West Hollywood’s #WeHoPride programming, presents Queer Prom 2022 – Reunited! June 18th 5-930pm at the iconic Globe Theater in Downtown LA.

After two years of Covid cancellations, and an extended recovery from long-haul Covid, Kacy decided to bring their vision of having a Queer Prom where all identities can be their true selves to life. Originally set to launch in 2020, this American rite of passage was a dream Kacy had for years because they never felt safe to attend prom as a young student. Coming out as a trans masculine, gender non-binary queer human in their adult life, NiK Kacy dreamt of finally attending prom as their authentic self and wanted others to be able to do the same.

Kacy, who is also the creator and Executive Producer of Equality Fashion Week, the first LGBTQ+ focused fashion week in LA, had been wanting to find ways to raise funds to continue the work EFW does to bring empowerment for the LGBTQ+ community, particularly with QTDBIPOC folks. In addition, they are passionate about creating more joyful moments and experiences that lead to healing while we continue the fight for equal rights and respect in a world filled with discord, divide and discrimination.

Queer Prom 2022: Reunited! will create a reimagined prom experience for the queer community where everyone is accepted. There will be a talent show hosted by comedian, writer, actor, AB Farrelly, as well as the Empowerment in Heels and QWN mashup danceup, led by EIH founder, Miss Marquez. Classic prom portraits will be taken by renowned photographer and activist, Sean Black, and of course there will be the quintessential royal coronation of the Prom Royals. The event will be hosted by The Real L-Word star, Rose Garcia who will act as “Principal Garcia”. The official after-party will be held at Bar Franca, just a short 5-minute walk away from the Globe Theater. NiK Kacy hopes Queer Prom will be a joyful reclaiming of what may have been painful memories for many queer youths.
