How Many American Men Want To Have Butt Sex?

Dr. Thomas W. Gaither currently works in the Department of Urology, University of California, Los Angeles  (UCLA) where he does research in urology and sexual medicine.

Gaither is also on TikTok as @that_prostate_doctor. where he has nearly 15,000 followers and 55,000 likes. On January 2nd, he asked “How common is receptive anal intercourse?”

Noting that there wasn’t any really good new data, he cites a 2015 study at Indiana University that he says gives us a good sense of the accurate number. He says it determined about 10 percent of men in the United States between the ages of 18 and 65 have had receptive anal intercourse in their lifetime. This was by gender not sexual orientation.

He notes some other statistics in the aim of arguing that human sexuality is very diverse.

On background: Gaither was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. He graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington with degrees in neuroscience and psychology. After undergrad, he joined the Teach for America program and taught high school chemistry and biology in San Jose, California. Later, he studied medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. During medical school, he received his masters in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics at UCSF with a thesis in postoperative complications after penile inversion vaginoplasty for gender affirmation surgery. His research interests include observational data analysis, cost-effectiveness, and risk factor identification in pediatrics and reconstructive urology.
