Based on Colson Whitehead’s ground breaking novel, the mini-series streamed on Amazon. Jenkins was the mastermind behind Moonlight and if Beale Street Could Talk, and in April 2021, he and his Pastel prodco partners signed a first-look television deal with HBO and A24.
Jenkins was presented the award by Andrew Garfield.

Amazing moment when Barry Jenkins wins (and gets deserving standing o), and says when he wanted to give up on The Underground Railroad, his agent Jaime Feld suggested he watch Steven Spielberg’s acceptance speech for Schindler’s List. #DGAAwards pic.twitter.com/1OleXWTNnc
