MONKEY BUSINESS LGBTQ+ Organizations Call on Congress to Urgently Approve Increased Funding to Address the Monkeypox Crisis.

In response to the nationwide MPX (monkeypox) public health emergency, President Biden requested that Congress allocate $4.5 billion in emergency funding, including $1.6 billion to strengthen vaccine manufacturing and hundreds of millions more to support state and local testing, vaccination, and treatment efforts. Congress heinously chose not to include this funding in a Continuing Resolution, endangering the lives of LGBTQ+ people across the country. As the outbreak continues to disproportionately impact LGBTQ+ communities and, more specifically, Black and Latinx individuals, Congress has failed to allocate one cent in response. As a result, states, local health departments, and community-based organizations have effectively been abandoned at this crucial point in the outbreak.

“The failure of Congress to respond with the urgency and funding necessary to prevent the physical and emotional suffering felt by the LGBTQ+ community is beyond disappointing. Despite the declaration of human monkeypox as a federal public health emergency, there are still too many members of Congress who do not care about our communities,” said Los Angeles LGBT Center CEO Joe Hollendoner. “What’s most appalling is that the COVID response has provided us with lessons on how to properly manage a public health crisis. Still, the lessons learned to prevent an outbreak from becoming a pandemic are not being used for the LGBTQ+ community.”

“We’re at a key inflection point where we can prevent MPX from spreading to the general population,” stated Jim Mangia, CEO of St. John’s Community Health. “If Congress fails to appropriately fund this effort, they will be responsible for creating the environment for another public health crisis— fresh on the heels of the COVID pandemic. We implore Congress to act.”

“We are dismayed to learn that critically-needed funding to address the continuing MPX public health crisis was not included in the Continuing Resolution,” said Tyler TerMeer, PhD, CEO of San Francisco AIDS Foundation. “San Francisco continues to see the harmful effects of this entirely preventable infection on members of our community—harm that is only exacerbated by the lack of a coordinated and consistent response at the federal level. We continue to call on our leaders in government to address MPX with the long overdue funding and resources we need to end this public health emergency.”

Congress’ failure to fund the nation’s response to the MPX outbreak tells us they learned nothing from HIV/AIDS, COVID, or the nation’s out-of-control STD epidemic,” said APLA Health CEO Craig E. Thompson. “All these public health disasters, all of the deaths, and all of the disease could have been reduced with some political courage and up-front funding to address emerging pandemics. Congress failed before; they have failed again. Congress must act. Their failure is not just reprehensible; it will cost us more in human suffering and higher health care costs in the long run.”

Our organizations urge Congress to approve increased funding through the regular or supplemental appropriations process to meaningfully address the MPX outbreak and the needs of impacted communities.

ART BASEL Season Kicks Off iin Miami Beach: Lady Liberty – A Bonnie Lautenberg Retrospective at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU: “Powerful Images of Women Championing Freedom from Two Decades of Art by Bonnie Lautenberg.”

Opens November 16 through March 26.

The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU kicks off Art Basel Season in Miami Beach with the premiere of the new exhibition Lady Liberty: A Bonnie Lautenberg Retrospective (opens November 16th through March 26th). The new solo museum show celebrates powerful images of women from two decades of art by Lautenberg. Spanning her multiple series of photography and conceptual art, the women in these works are admired by Lautenberg for their spirit of freedom.

The exhibition includes her portrayals of the Statue of Liberty confronting some of today’s most challenging issues. In response to the recent Supreme Court vote to overturn Roe vs. Wade, Lautenberg created Tears of Roe – a large-scale lightbox with tears running down the Statue of Liberty’s cheeks and the word Roe added to her crown, lamenting the current challenges to women’s freedoms making headlines today. Bonnie Lautenberg is an artist, photographer and writer based in New York and Palm Beach. Her works have been featured in gallery shows, museums and art fairs throughout the country.

“I am so honored to be selected by the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU during Miami Art Week and Art Basel Miami Beach, especially at this time when women’s issues are at the forefront,” says Bonnie Lautenberg.

One of her Lady Liberty works is currently on view at the New York Historical Society Museum’s Center for the Study of American Culture, in an exhibition about how New York artists found original ways to express their appreciation for health care workers during the pandemic.

FLASH FACT When the platypus feeds, as seen in the video, the characteristic side-to-side motion of its bill serves to sensorily map out its food sources via electroreception. Because the platypus uses neither sight nor smell when feeding, it is reliant on detecting electrical impulses generated by its prey.

KINGDOM of The Planet of the Apes is coming… The Hollywood Reporter:

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes picks up many years after War for the Planet of the Apes, the 2017 feature that concluded the previous trilogy and used motion capture technology to tell the origin story of Caesar, a chimp that leads the simians toward revolution. Andy Serkis starred as Caesar, with Matt Reeves directing the final two installments to critical acclaim.

Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, and Patrick Aison will pen the script. Joe Hartwick Jr. Jaffa, Silver and Jason Reed are producing, with Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping executive producing.

Planet of the Apes, based on the 1963 novel by Pierre Boulle, was first adapted for the screen in the 1968 film starring Charlton Heston, which spawned four sequels and two TV series. Tim Burton directed a 2001 reboot, and Fox relaunched the franchise in 2011 with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. To date, the films have grossed $1.7 billion globally.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes goes into production next month.

GUYS WITH WIVES Over at Jezebel: “If there’s a particular kind of guy who is not having a great time right now, it’s the Wife Guy—a guy who has built an entire brand, or at least a running bit, around how much he loves his wife. Think: Alec Baldwin, Ryan Reynolds, former President Barack Obama, John Mulaney before last year, NBA player Steph Curry.

Ousted Try Guy Ned Fulmer broke the internet this week when he, his wife, and his (former) co-stars confirmed the great internet conspiracy theory that he’d been removed from the YouTube show for cheating on his wife with one of their producers. Yet another cheating scandal, and amongst a group of YouTubers, at that, probably wouldn’t have been so fascinating to the world had it not been for the fact that Fulmer was, if not the king of the Wife Guys, then something very close to that. Fulmer’s whole internet persona was that he loves his wife—he co-wrote a cookbook with her based on their date nights.”

BAD ASS literally.
