#GAYNRD DAILY  Our (sometimes) daily round-up of news, factoids, art, and ephemera from around the globe, and, you know, social media…. for February 19, 2022… President’s Day Weekend.

SECRET ORIGIN The original symbiote design was black and red. Wow, the darkness expressed in the bottom right spidey ????

The black costume originated in 1982 from an idea submitted by 22-year-old fan Randy Schueller, after Marvel ran a competition for aspiring writers and artists to elicit new ideas for the Marvel Universe.

Schueller’s idea was to slightly upgrade Spider-Man’s abilities and appearance: He would don a new black, stealth-like suit designed by Reed Richards and The Wasp of the Avengers.

Composed of the same unstable molecules found in the Fantastic Four’s costumes, this new suit would be more durable and stealth-like than the handmade red and blue costume.

The idea was purchased by Jim Shooter at Marvel for the sum of 220 US dollars (over 500 dollars today) and the opportunity to craft the story. Schueller submitted different versions of the story, but ultimately, Marvel took creative control.

It was not until 1984’s Secret Wars that the black costume would debut. Having damaged his original costume in battle, Spider-Man discovers a machine thought to be a fabric replicator.

The machine produces a black sphere, which then engulfs Peter in black goo, eventually forming his suit while augmenting his powers and abilities. The suit would later be revealed to be a symbiotic life form.

The black costume first debuted in Amazing Spider-Man #252 with the tagline “The rumors are true”, affirming suspicions that Spider-Man would be getting a new costume. Before its revelation, fans rejected the idea and wrote to Marvel asking them not to change the suit. However, Marvel could not remove the black suit since Secret Wars #8– which revealed the suit’s origin– had yet to be released. source/MarvelFandom

NAILED IT Jack Harlow’s “Nail Tech” is number one.

Harlow article is solid, he also has true legitimacy in the lyricism circles because he killed the five fingers of death which is about the only mark of freestyling/lyricism skills that matters – doesnt get you pop fame, but it gets you master of the craft status – separates the hip-hop heads from the kiddy pop rap This was his second run at it  Joshua Gallagher

CANCELLED Student debt. Poll Shows 83% of Democrats Want Biden to Nix Student Debt “Even Americans who don’t carry student debt themselves are sympathetic and are supportive of loan forgiveness.”  Common Dreams: The data, said Bryan Bennett, senior director of polling and analytics at the Hub Project and adviser to Navigator Research, “shows that President Biden canceling student loan debt could be hugely consequential to millions of Americans facing significant financial burdens amidst the pain of rising costs—it would decrease the racial wealth gap and potentially help him regain support from Black and Hispanic Americans in particular, where he has seen erosion in job approval over the last few months.”

“Even Americans who don’t carry student debt themselves,” he noted, “are sympathetic and are supportive of loan forgiveness.”

The new polling comes amid mounting calls for Biden to wipe out a debt crisis affecting over 40 million Americans and that’s now reached over $1.8 trillion.

CRIMINAL ‘Staggering’ study reveals 46% of unemployed U.S. men have criminal convictions. Science: Employers should “rethink” using criminal histories in hiring decisions, researchers say. One in three adults in the United States has been arrested at least once, a strikingly high number compared with many other countries. Now, a new study reveals one of the implications of that figure: Nearly half of unemployed U.S. men have criminal convictions, which makes it harder to get a job, according to an analysis of survey data of men ages 30 to 38.

READY Viola Davis as Michelle Obama. Showtime’s new anthology series The First Lady tells the stories of Washington DC’s first ladies, and it’s hit the jackpot in perfect casting. Viola Davis — who’s also primed to executive produce the series along with JuVee Productions, the company she runs with her husband, Julius Tennon — has signed on to star as Michelle Obama in the drama series’s first season. If there were levels to Black Girl Magic, this would be some top-tier sorcery that we can wholeheartedly get behind! According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate and JuVee Productions have teamed up to develop the drama series, which will focus on the “personal and political lives of the country’s most enigmatic heroes.” Season one will follow Eleanor Roosevelt, Betty Ford, and of course, Michelle Obama. The series was originally on order for three scripts, but since then, Showtime has ordered a full season, having it join other network series including “The L Word,” “Shameless,” and “On Becoming a God in Central Florida.”

CRINGE Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz Tryin’ To Be Tom Holland and Zendaya So Bad

FUCKER Tucker Carlson calls AOC a “rich white lady.” She calls him trash. Newsweek: Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has referred to Fox News host Tucker Carlson as a “creep” after he falsely claimed that she was not a person of color but instead a “rich, entitled white lady.” Carlson insisted that Ocasio-Cortez was white despite her “shade” while discussing the upcoming book Take Up Space: The Unprecedented AOC during the Friday night edition of his Tucker Carlson Tonight program. Carlson took exception to the book’s authors writing that the congresswoman lived “fully out loud while female,” asking whether they were referring to “a trans thing” before arguing that “no one has done more personally to degrade American womanhood.”

EDMUND WHITE In Defense of Aging Twinks in Dazed: There is a spectre haunting the gay community: the ‘ageing twink’. He is an object of pity and scorn; tragi-comic and embittered, desperately clinging on to something, occasionally drug-ravaged or otherwise scarred by excess. There are countless Reddit threads where people discuss his unfortunate fate and how one might escape it: these conversations are staggeringly bleak, with some approaching the idea with vindictive relish and others, clearly anxious twinks themselves, engaging in something approaching digital self-harm; anticipating their own bodily decay and permanent banishment from the world of desire. The ageing twink is mocked in front-facing comedy TikToks: “one day, you’ll lose your charm, you’ll be a husk just like me” hisses one 29-year-old character, while another bemoans that “23 is 40 in twink years”.

This idea that there’s something pitiful about being an ageing gay man has a long legacy. Take Jacques, the middle-aged gay man in James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room (1956): “In some ways I liked him,” reflects the narrator. “He was silly but he was so lonely; anyway, I understand now that the contempt I felt for him involved my self-contempt.” Perhaps the contempt some gay men feel for ageing twinks always involves a degree of contempt for themselves, too. In my view, the literary ageing twink par excellence is actually a woman: Blanche DuBois, the brittle, fading southern Belle in Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire (1947). “Oh, in my youth I excited some admiration,” she tells a potential suitor, batting her eyelids and making sure to avoid harsh lighting. “But look at me now! Would you think it possible that I was once considered to be – attractive?” Recently I was shocked to discover that Blanche – this icon of decline, dissolution and lost youth – is just 30 years old.

Reading States of Desire today, the dynamic being described doesn’t seem entirely alien, even if it’s no longer as common or rigidly coded. But crucially, White argues that it was already old-fashioned in 1980, a throwback to an earlier and more repressed era which, by then, continued to exist only in places untouched by gay liberation. In New York and other sophisticated cities, the new ideal was “the hot man of 35” rather than the pretty young boy, and men in their thirties and forties were free to sleep with one another. The twink-and-older-man dynamic is a “game in which everyone loses,” writes White. “The beautiful boy can look forward only to outgrowing his looks and his beauty. The older man retains his attractiveness by virtue of his power and position in the world – a precarious perch.” The idea that twinks must become masculine daddies in order to retain their desirability is, in White’s words, “especially cruel to the shy, sexually passive lad who is prized for these very qualities when he is young and spurned for them when he is older.”
