Actor Austin Butler has got all the buzz right now. The 30 year-old actor is a revelation, praised by Priscilla, applauded by the audience and panned by some critics in director Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis.
Set to open June 24 in Memphis and the rest of the U.S., the Warner Bros. release — produced at a cost of $200 million, according to some reports — received a 12-minute standing ovation at Cannes, which the entertainment website Deadline called “a 2022 record so far at the festival.”
The Presley family, however, has unreservedly endorsed Luhrmann’s effort, with Lisa Marie Presley, praising the movie as a “deeply profound” reckoning with her father’s life and legacy.
Also a fan is Guillermo del Toro, who won the Best Director Academy Award for “The Shape of Water,” which won the 2017 Best Picture Oscar. “The film is dazzling, bold and moving,” del Toro wrote Thursday on Twitter. “Austin Butler absolutely nails it — all the shades: voice, moves, emotion. Loved it. Loved it. Loved it.”
