Superman’s Reaction To His Son Coming Out Reaffirming Him as the World’s Greatest Hero

Share

Jonathan Kent finally came out to his father Clark, Superman, in the pages of Superman: Son of Kal-El #17 out this week and it was so deftly handled and made such sense for the father of superheroes that I can’t believe it hadn’t been done already.

“Anyone who makes your life better is a hero in my eyes.”

That was Clark’s response after Jonathan introduces his boyfriend.

The most perfect and most “Superman” reaction one could have imagined.

Writer Tom Taylor has faced a lot of bs writing this series and he said: “If our series is remembered for anything (beyond the global news it made with issue #5) I hope it’s this issue.”

Comic Watch:

“This issue made me cry. Not delicate little pearls glistening on my cheeks, but rather a great heaving, rib-wracking sobs of joy, envy, and desire. Joy, because Taylor handled a subject that society makes difficult (a boy introducing his father to his boyfriend should be simple, damn it) with delicacy, love, and a level of tenderness that the subject deserves… If you are the parent of an LGBTQ child, please read it. If you are an LGBTQ person who is struggling to come out to the people whom you love, this was written for you. I cannot recommend it strongly enough. This is balm for the spirit.”

ComicBook.com:

Superman: Son of Kal-El #17 should be required reading for every parent, especially every parent of an LGBTQ+ child. It’s a master work of grace, dignity, and unconditional love of a parent for a child and Tom Taylor not only made me cry reading it, but he does a beautiful job of articulating the dynamics of not only Clark and Jon’s relationship, but that of all complicated parent child relationships.”

“Taylor, Tormey, and every other creative who’s worked on the issue haven’t simply had Clark tell Jon that he’ll always love and defend him — they’ve told every queer reader who picks up the book that Superman will always love and defend them as well.”

Superman: Son of Kal-El #17 is on sale now.
