Season 3 of DC’s Stargirl Sees the Debut of Gay Superhero Obsidian

Share

The son of the original golden age Green Lantern Alan Scott, Obsidian will make his debut in Stargirl season 3, joining his twin sister Jade who’s already a recurring character.

The gay superhero who was once a member of DC’s Infinity Inc. will join the cast and like in the comics wields “strange and uncontrollable shadow abilities.” He’s been living on the streets and searching for his sister, but he falls into the hands of The Helix Institute for Youth Rehabilitation and the mysterious Mr. Bones (Keith David) — who showed up in the final moments of the season 2 finale teasing their impending arrival in Blue Valley — who are determined to understand Todd’s powers.

Actor Tim Gabriel will be playing the role of Todd Rice a.k.a. Obsidian, the son of Alan Scott/Golden Age Green Lantern and the twin brother of Jennie-Lynn Hayden/Jade (Ysa Penarejo).

Entertainment Weekly:

In the comics, Todd Rice starts off as a superhero alongside his sister, and they both were founding members of Infinity, Inc., a group dedicated to continuing the legacy of the Justice Society of America. But eventually he turned evil and fought against the new JSA as well as his adoptive and real fathers. Will DC’s Stargirl‘s interpretation of Todd take the character down the same tragic path? Are we heading towards a potential Jade vs. Obsidian showdown?

Obsidian was always a haunted character apparently inheriting the darkness to Jade’s light and more like his mother the golden age Rose and Thorn. The character came out in Marc Andreyko’s critically acclaimed run on Manhunter in the mid 1990s joining his now openly gay father Scott.

Created by Roy Thomas and Jerry Ordway the character really made a splash when Todd McFarlane took over for art duties on Infinity Inc. and was one of the first of McFar;ane’s “wild cape” characters.

DC’s Stargirl is scheduled to return this summer on The CW.
