Damez writes on Instagram:

i was very intentional about shooting this video in a Black barbershop. i used to get my haircut here as a kid, and swept the floors on weekends for $13/day…

growing up i always found the Black barbershop to be one of the most interesting spaces — our culture, hair textures, sense of decor, aesthetic, is all very unique to the Black barbershop. it’s a space full of history, aging furniture, and autographed memorabilia on the walls. its a space where you may possibly enter feeling like less of yourself, and yet you leave with a sense of self-confidence and reassurance that is unmatched…

sometimes, though, i left the barbershop with mixed feelings. sometimes, in my experiences, it was a space that protected hyper-masculinity and anything seen as less than that was condemned in conversation with great disgust and degradation. having to sit in a chair and wait for your hair to be cut as you overhear a group of older men around you exchange explicitly hateful and judgmental rhetoric, giving your money (as a child) to someone who basically just made it clear that he hates everything you are, all while you’re still trying to figure it all out on your own… is an experience i can only now really put into words at 28 years old. it’s an experience i know a lot of Black LGBT+ people can relate to, and it’s an experience that can’t be erased.

i’ve been writing lyrics since before i even knew what sexuality was, so it’s pretty interesting to see how much people allow it to affect how they receive music & art. but we making progress and that’s what matters.

there’s space for all of us, and why would i wait around for my seat at the table when i can just create my own?

Speed On the Beat:

“Agenda” is a track that addresses homophobia in the rap community. However, instead of just focusing on how the rap community can possess a varying range of homophobia, Damez uses “Agenda” to speak on a wide variety of topics. I think that’s what makes the song work on several levels, his inability to be boxed into one category or sound. Throughout the song, the Atlanta rapper bounces over the boombap beat to speak on crooked police, religion, politicians, his own life and hobbies–not to mention just delivering bars on top of bars.

I also like the barbershop aesthetic of the video. Considering some Black men talk a lot in barbershops (some of which may have a bit of sexism or homophobia within it), this is an important setting. That’s because it also speaks to the male gaze of hip-hop while giving Damez his props–both as a Black LGBTQ+ artist and a soul-reaching activist in his own right. This is especially seen with how comfortable Damez is spitting his truths while the patrons bob their heads along with Damez’ bars, giving their agreeance with and “blessing” to what he’s putting down. I’m here for this, especially because the brother’s got BARS.

The lyrics to Damez’ “Agenda:”

Damez, I’m back with my agenda
Never followed rules, I want my funeral magenta
Just to piss off all my fucking homophobic relatives
It’s growing more imperative that I control my narratives
So I spit fire through this pop filter
Lala, you got to have the zaza for me to shop with ya
Raising my rates and I don’t control fates but if you fuck with me
I’ll bring ya fucking life to a stop quicker
I’m in ya throat like some hot liquor
Roll through ya hood like a drop shipper, enhanced like a stock filter
I think if I was straight then maybe I would pop quicker?
Playing the lotto, I’m on the reposado
Can’t be in my vicinity if you possessing maybes
Or fragile masculinity like Boosie, Tip, or Baby
It’s crazy cause them very clothes you wearing was designed
By the same group of people you still tryna keep behind
You ain’t worried bout the kids, you just use ’em as a shield
To hide behind the bigotry of how you really feel
Ain’t no think pieces and emails as long as it’s some females
That’s kissing in the back seat
And you can check my rap sheet
I’m running circles ’round these washed up rappers like a track meet
Been flexing like an athlete, I’m jigging to the back beat
Work selling then the trap eat, and my niggas pack heat
Suggest to keep it cool before they buss and make ya hat leak
And I ain’t even really scratch the surface
Defeat the self doubt, don’t defeat the purpose
Make sure you got it or you won’t complete the purchase
A man without a plan is like a clown without a circus
That’s Damez, he go crazy on the mics and shit
Rollin’ blunts, super straight on the pipes and shit
Fat ass with the fucking tiger stripes and shit
I get faded, grab my pen and then I write some shit
About this crazy world we living in, my homies steady giving in
The doors steady kicking in, I never cared ’bout fitting in (Nope)
Whipping a E-Class that motherfucker speed fast
I cop me a Peach Pass then reach for my weed stash
No sports teams but I’m ballin’ nigga
Better have a money move if you callin’ nigga
It’s my time to shine and you know I’m stallin’ nigga
Damez goin’ up, ain’t that shit appalling nigga?
And I ain’t really even in my prime yet
But I just been grinding like the time set
Mindset on the fucking money, not a bitch though
I can tell you broke but I ain’t never been a snitch though
Came up on cassettes and CDs on the block
I don’t smoke no cigarettes but the trees stay in stock
It’s the D-A-M to the I-E-N, and if I stand out, nigga why be in?
It’s motherfuck the cops and motherfuck the opps
My niggas got good credit we talking trades and stocks
Ima always keep it real, that’s what I get from my Pops
They’ll give me a fuckin’ bullet ‘fore they give me my props
I got this war in my mind but I don’t know who winning
All this Patron in my body and my head keep spinning
Yo, how Ima get to heaven? I mean if I keep sinning?
I swear life will drive you crazy man just keep living (On God)
And I ain’t even really scratch the surface
Defeat the self doubt, don’t defeat the purpose
Make sure you got it or you won’t complete the purchase
A man without a plan is like a clown without a circus (Damez)
And I ain’t even really scratch the surface
Defeat the self doubt, don’t defeat the purpose
Make sure you got it or you won’t complete the purchase
A man without a plan is just a clown without a circus
Hip-hop
This rap shit… It’s just in me
Know what I’m saying?
