LA’s newest music festival was a unique and forward-thinking experience. Penske Media Corporation’s LA3C (standing for Los Angeles, Capital of Creativity & Culture) took place last weekend in downtown Los Angeles at Los Angeles Historic Park and featured a lineup that can only be described as eclectic.

While headlining acts like Snoop Dog are a major cross-generational draw, the real excitement of the festival was seeing an artist lineup that varied wildly between pro-gamers turned DJ, K-Pop sensations Seventeen, and numerous homegrown heroes from LA’s diverse and vibrant subcultures. I can’t think of another other festival where I’ve seen a youtuber, Jane Goodall (yes, THAT Jane Goodall), and Snoop on the same stage in one day.

As I walked the sprawling expanse of art installations and vendors I couldn’t help but notice that the vibes were incredibly good. Everyone was having a good time and the energy was laid back enough that I spied artists chilling near the main stage crowd between sets. This wasn’t a factor of intimacy either; the festival was very well-attended and easily accessible from public transportation (a rarity in LA). Maybe it was the high of attending a post-Covid show, or maybe it was the joy of having something going on in the Winter, but the staff, attendees, and artists felt like they were all in on this first year festival.

I can’t wait for the next installment.

From the Festival: “LA3C has made a commitment to nurture “the city’s creative heart and preserving Los Angeles as a capital of creativity and culture for years to come.” To that end, it has partnered with nonprofit arts organizations Heart of Los Angeles, which helps young people overcome barriers through no-cost academic, arts, athletics and wellness programs, and Film Independent, which champions creative independence in visual storytelling and supports emerging filmmakers from communities underrepresented, to support the next generations of creative talent in Los Angeles.”
