Share

Joe Jonas has been busy with a multitude of artistic projects, including acting and photography, but on the top of his list is new music with DNCE and the long-awaited Vegas residency with The Jonas Brothers. In order to juggle everything in his life and stay sane, the Grammy-winner admits balance is the key. In the most recent interview on The Spout Podcast, Joe Jonas reveals his mental health routine while reminiscing on his career, family, pranks, and the one song he was too embarrassed to perform live.

After a four-year hiatus, Jonas is making new music again with his band DNCE, releasing “Dancing Feet” with KYGO.  In his interview with host Bru Baker, Jonas is grateful for his long career and the opportunity to continue making music while he is still “young and fresh.”

“Dancing Feet” was the first recording session for Jonas since the pandemic started, he explains:

Kygo hit me up and was like ‘hey, I have this song…take a listen,’ and it’s been the launching pad back into music again as a band.  There’s no real timeline. It’s just let’s see how ‘Dancing Feet’ does and people really love it, which they seem to really enjoy it, and kind of ride that wave and then more to come.

Host Bru Baker asked about upcoming performances and what it looks like for the band. Although Jonas was not specific, he hinted toward a few unexpected pop-up performances for fans, saying, “You know, there’s always gigs on the horizon. Jonas Brothers also, we’ve got a Vegas residency that we announced, and the tickets sold really quick. So, it was just a hard show not to say no to, I think if you’re a fan, I mean, you’re going to Vegas. It’s a good time. And so, I’ll have DNCE pop up on stage there. And then KYGO’s got a bunch of really exciting gigs, so if you’re a fan of him or us or just of music and you’re music lover, and if you like EDM and you want to go to a festival, then you may or may not see us on stage with him.  So, we’ll see!”

Now that the brothers are all grown up with families of their own, Baker asked if there is any sibling rivalry or competition, like, who’s the best dad. Jonas admits golf is still a sore spot, explaining:

Oh man, you know, golf is definitely going to be something that we really share, that we can get out there and kind of let loose and we definitely get competitive. I’m probably the least competitive out of the brothers, like, if you get Kevin and Nick out there and if they’re sharing a golf cart, it’s just bad news bears. I think that what worked for them in their favor over the last two years is that in some country clubs you couldn’t share a cart, or you had a divider and that saved them from, like, just beating each other up. I’m just a classic middle brother in the middle, like, I’m just here to have a drink and have fun.

His ability to stay out of the brotherly antics possibly comes from the daily mental health practices that bring him balance throughout the day. Jonas details his routine and reveals he starts first thing in the morning:

So I start my day with Headspace, the app, and that can be like sitting in silence or brushing my teeth. It’s just a way for me to check in with myself before I’m checking on social media or I’m texting people because it’s so easy to look at your phone first thing in the morning and be like, oh, I have to do this work thing or I missed this call or like, something’s going on in the world that it’s easy to make sure to like, just check in with yourself before you check in with anything else.

And then I write a gratitude list of what I’m grateful for that day, and it can be short; as simple as, I’m grateful for this coffee that I’m about to have and it’s going to give me the energy for the day, or it’s like bigger and broader. I’m grateful that I’ve got two legs that I can walk and run, and I got eyes that work that I could see the world and a voice that I can express my love for music. And so, it’s everything from the small stuff to the big stuff.

His mindfulness practice seems to be paying off as he successfully overcomes the challenges of acting and music, while still finding the time to hone in on his love of photography; capturing the moments of life and never once taking for granted the amazing opportunity to live out his dreams.

When asked to answer something his younger self would not believe about his present-day life, Jonas quipped, “I would say, more than anything, that I’m still doing this, you know. I think like, oh, I know my younger self believed I could do it, but the hard work had to be put into place. And so, I’m proud of that kid because he busted his ass to get where he is now… good job, little Joe.”
