Hillary Duff Recreates PSA on Harmful Saying ‘That’s So Gay’

Actress Hillary Duff, the former Disney tween queen and star of their Lizzie McGuire franchise, recreated her famous 2008 “Think Before You Speak” PSA — which condemned the use of the phrase “that’s so gay” and was a viral hit — in a new TikTok video.

Duff posted the video on the social media site Thursday featuring Pentatonix member Scott Hoying and his fiancé, Mark Manio, taking over the roles formerly played by teen girls in the viral campaign. “That’s so gay,” Manio tells Hoying via voice-over as the a cappella singer tries on a top and asks, “Really?”
“Yeah, that’s so gay,” Manio reaffirms.
Duff, dubbing her original lines, then interrupts, “You know, you really shouldn’t say that.”
Hoying — still portraying the teen girl — asks, “Say what?”
“Well, say that something’s gay when it’s bad. It’s insulting,” the “How I Met Your Father” star responds.
“What if every time something was bad, everybody said, ‘Ugh, that’s so girl wearing a skirt as a top?’ … Those are cute jeans, though.”

Duff, who is now 34 years-old, explained in the caption of the clip why she decided to do the remake, noting, “@Scott Hoying & @markmanio410 tying the shirt on as a skirt/top made me say yes😂 also 14 years later -still holds up ♥️.”

Fans in the comments section praised the “Lizzie McGuire” alum for the impact the PSA had on them years ago.

“i literally stopped saying that cause of this commercial,” one user wrote.
“HILARYYY this commercial meant so much to me,” another added.

When the “Think Before You Speak” campaign debuted, Duff told CNN:

“I think it’s so important. We are just not kind enough to each other, and there’s no reason why kids should go to school and it not be a safe place for them or they should not be accepted.”

Duff also noted that she has “plenty of gay friends” whom she “loves to death” and would “never want to do or say anything to hurt their feelings.”

Duff told The Gay Times in January:

“I really feel like the whole entire gay community supported me from the very, very beginning when nobody would take me seriously as a singer. So, I feel like I owe the community everything.”
