Division One College Football Player Ryan DeLuca Comes Out Gay

Furman University wide receiver Ryan DeLuca came out as gay in an Instagram post Thursday.
The division one player is one of many who Out Sports says reflects “the widespread support we found in our study of out LGBTQ athletes this year, Out In Sports, that showed 97% of LGBTQ college athletes who came out to their teammates had at worst a “neutral” experience doing so.”
“I’ve been wanting to come out for a while now,” DeLuca wrote on Instagram. “I think I’m finally ready and I’m proud of it. I want to thank everyone who knows and has supported me to this point, you all mean a lot to me. Thank you to the one that makes me smile.”

The outpouring of love was overwhelming.
“I wasn’t expecting the kind of reaction I got,” Deluca told Out Sports. “It was awesome. Almost every single one of my teammates, and almost everyone I’ve come in contact with at college, gave me love. And I didn’t expect it, that’s for sure.”
Deluca said he almost never heard comments from his teammates that were degrading of gay people.
