TIGER KING and America’s captive tiger problem. Netflix’s new docuseries Tiger King takes viewers into the strange world of big cat collectors. Featuring eccentric characters with names like Joe Exotic and Bhagavan “Doc” Antle, the series touches on polygamy, addiction and personality cults, while exploring a mysterious disappearance and a murder-for-hire. To Allison Skidmore, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, Santa Cruz who studies wildlife trafficking, the documentary didn’t bring enough attention to the scourge of captive big cats. A former park ranger, Skidmore first started studying the issue in the U.S. after the infamous death of Cecil the Lion in Zimbabwe in 2015. She was shocked to learn about how little oversight there was stateside. The Conversation asked her about the legality, incentives and ease of buying and selling tigers.

TWITTER MASTER Jaboukie Young-White tells New York Magazine about his frequent suspensions on Twitter and his avatar changing schemes. White, the comedian and Daily Show correspondent, with nearly 700,000 followers. frequently changes his avatar and display name to impersonate a famous person or company — CNN, the Cats movie, the FBI, Donald Trump — in order to tweet something slyly obscene or slickly clever. It’s a gag the comedian pulls often, and it’s a stunt that gets him suspended from the site regularly. Death, taxes, a late-night “u up?” text from an ex, a Jaboukie Young-White Twitter suspension — the only things in this world that are certainties. After Joe Biden had been conspicuously absent from any public events or livestreams near the end of March, Young-White did it again, posing as the CNN Breaking News account. “BREAKING: Joe Biden is not DEAD. He just getting some dick. We’ve all been there,” he tweeted. Within the hour, his account was shut down. The routine is always the same: Jaboukie is suspended, his account disappears, his fans and friends tweet pleas for him to be reinstated. Like another light-skin king — Jesus, son of God — @jaboukie rises from the dead. The tweets are pranks, but they show his dexterity as a 20-something comedian who can fire off micro-parodies of the internet, politics, and our general cultural ennui, all at once. Currently quarantining in Brooklyn with his younger brother, he says he’s “chilling and vibing.” Young-White got on the phone with Vulture for a socially distanced chat about the internet and how living through a pandemic might change comedy forever.
CHOKE A BITCH Did The Flash’s Ezra Miller really choke a female fan? Variety reports, “Ezra Miller appears to have choked a woman at a bar in Reykjavik, Iceland in a video that surfaced online late Sunday night. Despite confusion online over whether the video was a joke — with memes already emerging on Twitter, where Miller’s name has been trending — a source at the establishment, Prikið Kaffihús, has confirmed to Variety that this was a serious altercation at the bar, and that the man, whom they identify as Miller, was escorted off the premises.
The seven-second video shows a man saying, ”Oh, you wanna fight? That’s what you wanna do?” to a young woman, who appears to be jokingly preparing herself for a fight and is smiling.
OAN John Oliver takes down Trump’s new fave network. Oliver took down OAN (One America News network) on Sunday night, Trump’s new favorite network, “the brainchild of conservative millionaire Robert Herring,” known for its race-baiting, anti-LGBTQ perspectives, and fondness for conspiracy theories. “The problem is, if we’re learning one thing right now, it’s that toxic things that start small can get big fast, and it’s dangerous to ignore them. And right now, the president’s putting a lot of energy into boosting OAN’s profile.”
“In the best of times, you can laugh at an almost Anchorman-esque parody of right-wing news, but much like the problem with Anchorman 2, it’s just not the right time for Ron Burgundy right now,” continued Oliver. “OAN’s weird combination of far-right-wing talking points and dirt-stupid reporting is incredibly dangerous at a time like this.”
